The Fellowship Baptist Church Expansion continued to make remarkable progress throughout July, bringing the vision for the new facility into sharper focus. What began as structural framing has quickly transformed into a recognizable building, with the new entrance and gathering spaces now taking shape and showcasing the future home for worship, fellowship, and ministry.
One of the project's biggest milestones this month was reaching approximately 98% completion of the structural steel framework, while nearly 90% of the structural steel roof decking has also been installed. With the building's structure nearly complete, crews are preparing to transition into the next phase by drying in the building and advancing exterior systems.
Inside the new addition, construction activity has accelerated as interior metal stud framing reached roughly 85% completion. At the same time, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing rough-ins continue throughout the facility, laying the groundwork for future classrooms, gathering spaces, offices, and ministry areas. Installation of new HVAC equipment is also progressing, with careful coordination to keep the existing sanctuary systems operational until the new equipment is ready for commissioning.
Work within the existing church has also reached an important milestone. The second-floor demolition is now complete, and new wall openings have been finalized to seamlessly connect the expansion with the existing facility. Structural lintels have been installed over each opening, creating the framework that will ultimately unify the two buildings into one cohesive campus.
Another exciting achievement this month was the approval of permits for the Legacy Center renovation, allowing the next phase of improvements to move forward alongside the expansion. Together, these projects represent a significant investment in creating modern, functional spaces that will serve Fellowship Baptist Church and the Durham community for years to come.
Looking ahead to August, crews will complete the remaining structural steel, continue roofing and exterior wall installation to dry in the building, advance mechanical, electrical, and plumbing rough-ins, and begin preparing areas for drywall and interior finishes. With each milestone reached, the vision for Fellowship Baptist Church moves one step closer to becoming a reality.

Construction at Fellowship Baptist Church made significant strides throughout June as the project advanced from foundational work into vertical construction. With each milestone completed, the vision for the church's expansion is becoming more tangible.
Early in the month, crews completed foundation work and placed the slab-on-grade for the new addition. Shortly thereafter, structural steel began rising, defining the footprint of the future two-story entrance and gathering space. Seeing the building's framework take shape marked an exciting turning point, giving church members and the project team their first glimpse of the new front entrance that will welcome generations to come.
Inside the existing facility, progress continued just as steadily. Interior demolition moved forward to prepare for the renovation, allowing crews to install underground plumbing, relocate utilities, and complete structural shoring for the new openings that will connect the existing sanctuary with the expanded lobby. These behind-the-scenes improvements are critical to creating a seamless transition between the church's historic structure and its modern addition.
Looking ahead to July, construction will continue with additional structural steel, roof framing, masonry, exterior wall systems, and ongoing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing rough-ins. Each phase brings Fellowship Baptist Church one step closer to delivering a revitalized campus that honors its longstanding history while creating a welcoming environment for worship, fellowship, and community for years to come.
Stay tuned as we continue sharing the progress of this exciting transformation.

Construction is officially underway on the transformation and expansion of Fellowship Baptist Church, a project designed to modernize the church’s front-facing experience while enhancing accessibility, circulation, and community gathering spaces. The project includes a new two-story lobby addition, expanded restrooms, updated fellowship and coffee areas, ADA-compliant circulation improvements, and renovations to the existing front areas of the church. Exterior upgrades will introduce refreshed architectural elements, new glazing, roofing systems, and enhanced signage to create a more welcoming presence for both the congregation and the surrounding community.
Currently, construction activities are in full progress with demolition approximately 50% complete. The team has completed the building pad and is actively working through underground plumbing, electrical panel relocation, and structural footer installations for the new column systems. Upcoming milestones include concrete footers, CMU wall construction, slab placement, continued demolition activities, and anticipated structural steel delivery in mid-June.
One of the project’s most unique design elements is the integration of the church’s existing brick exterior wall into the new foyer space, preserving the history and character of the original structure while blending it with modern architectural features. Additional highlights include cloud acoustical ceiling panels, expansive glazing systems, and open gathering spaces designed to create a warm and inviting environment for fellowship and community engagement.
Located adjacent to a major freeway, the church’s highly visible location makes this project especially impactful for the surrounding Durham community. As the first major renovation and expansion since the church’s original construction in the early 1970s, the project represents a significant investment in the future of the congregation and its outreach efforts for years to come.
